Biography
Jason Lindsay is an artist currently based in Rock Hill, SC. He is working towards his BFA with a concentration in sculpture at Winthrop University in May 2022. Artists such as Alberto Burri, Francis Bacon, and Claire Falkenstein are some of his inspirations. Exploration and intuition are crucial to his sculptural work, which investigates material, as well as visualizations of emotion. Additionally, he has been producing printmaking works that are in conversation with his sculptures. He enjoys intensive processes that engage the body and excels at detailed, obsessive work. Artist Statement
One of the primary focuses of my work is experimentation and exploration. I investigate processes and materials, as well as modes of representing uncomfortable emotions and thoughts, and experiment with utilizing them in unique manners. One of the ways I do this is by working intuitively, developing the work as I consider many different possibilities and follow the most interesting one. This sense of curiosity motivates my work and helps keep my practice exciting and fresh. Often, I do not know what the final product will look like until its near completion and I’m challenged to work through my fear of the unknown. As I follow my initial spark of interest, I allow myself to fall deep into the rabbit hole. A recurring theme in my work is giving physical form to uncomfortable and unpleasant feelings and experiences. Some of these works, like Breakdown and Identity Crisis, are visualizations of how specific feelings appear in my mind’s eye, while others, like Take Care, Take Caution, are ambiguous forms that resonate conflicted feelings. These works explore the visceral way emotion is felt in our bodies and how it can affect our perception of reality. Additionally, I investigate the way that certain textures, colors, and forms can embody and inherently convey feelings of disgust, despair, and disillusionment. The goal of these works for viewers to identify with and project their own experiences and feelings onto them. Materiality is a critical part of my work. Working with traditional mediums, like wood and steel, and experimenting with unconventional materials, like hair and dirt, allows me to explore the unique qualities and textures possible in each. For example, Contagion combines wood, paper pulp, and concrete and plays on the contrasting textures created by each. Rather than merely being a means to an end, the materials become a defining element of the work. Along with my sculptural work, printmaking has also become an influential aspect of my artmaking. Diving into printmaking, both on its own and in conjunction with my sculptures, has allowed me to approach the same ideas from different directions. Previous projects have done this in ways such as pasting segments of prints onto a large, abstract sculpture. More recently, I have begun creating prints that are in direct conversation with my sculptures, utilizing the same imagery and even materials. Working in this way has challenged me to think about and approach my work more in a more interdisciplinary manner. |
